In the late
1940s Chrysler vehicles were bodied by T.J. Richards in Adelaide. This Woodie
wagon is believed to be the only surviving one built by Richards and ordered
through Lanes Motors for a Victorian purchaser.
differs significantly from the American Plymouth wagons – rear passenger doors
are square bottomed (USA has fender cut-outs); rear door is different; rear
vertical edges have a shaped shoulder; roof is metal with timber lining.
The car was
found by John Watmough in a fairly sorry state in a dealer on Nepean Highway in the 1970s. John was able to tell the current owner how he restored
the exterior timberwork and fitted the car with a Chevrolet 327 motor, THM
400 transmission and Jaguar suspension. Plus a very 1970s vinyl interior and
homemade dashboard with Stewart Warner instruments.
The car then
went on a round of surf shops. First to Dick Ash in Queensland who owned the
Okanui surf brand; then to Peninsula Surf in Mornington.
owner purchased the car in 2010 and has restored the interior with an original dashboard, new timber headlining, new
plywood panelling. All mechanicals have been fully
rebuilt, and a new vinyl roof is ready to fit. Rear seat is trimmed in Connolly hide leather. Everything to complete the car is there except the front seat.Roof has been stripped, sealed and areas not under the vinyl painted in a period Catalina Tan colour.Engine:
