1958 Mercedes 220S
This car will only be offered for a short time
(before I change my mind!) A beautiful 220S 4
speed manual 2.2 litre OHC six.
It was restored by the previous Sydney owner in
the 1980s, but then was stored for a long time
as a deceased estate before I purchased it in
late 2010. I purchased the car specifically
because I am a big Mercedes buff, and I wanted
one built in my birth year, 1958. I fitted new whitewall tyres to it,
did some mechanical work and treated the
sumptuous leather upholstery (front seats are
bucket seats from a 'Finnie' 220S installed by
the previous owner for comfort and all new
leather) before enjoying the
car for a short while on its NSW registration in
2011 before transferring the car to club
registration in mid 2011. The
first three photos show the car at this time.
The cylinder head soon proved to have some
corrosion, so the head was removed and I
purchased a 1959 donor car at great expense (more
than I'm asking here for both cars) from West
Australia. However, I was taken in by a
dishonest seller, and the cylinder head on that
car was so corroded I couldn't even remove it.
The rusty donor car remains in my yard as garden
art. It is, however, a source of many body trims
etc, and is part of this deal. The cylinder head
with new water deflectors is stored carefully in
my workshop, and comes with the car.
There is some minor non-structural rust in the
good car, but it is a stunning example that will
be easily rectified once a replacement head is
fitted, or the original head welded and
machined. It passed the Victorian roadworthy
requirements in 2011 and has not deteriorated at
all since, as it has been stored very carefully
in a dust-free, dry garage.
This is a
once-only, short-term listing for both
cars. They both roll but cannot be driven.
Brakes were good on the 'good' car but now not
functioning after several years in a clean, dry
Act fast or miss out. Once I take these off sale
I will complete the car myself to stay in the
Kelly St Classics collection. Cars can be viewed
in northern Victoria. The car is presently still
registered on non-transferable Victorian club
registration, but will be sold unregistered and
I welcome inspections (an hour north of Bendigo)
but will definitely not consider a sale at under
the starting price.
Starting price is the very realistic reserve -
the highest bid wins. So bid early (before I
change my mind and withdraw the car) to have a
chance to be the next owner of this lovely old
First three photos are of car as I drove it on previous NSW plates in
2011 just before putting onto club registration
Following photos are of the car Sunday 25/11/2018 in the garage where it has
sat, covered, for 7 1/2 years.
Below is the parts car that is part of this deal. Largely complete,
but rusty. Still many, many good parts!
